Halloween
Scrimmage
Balboa Bay hosted two Halloween
scrimmages this past weekend. The 16s participated in a 6 team round robin
Saturday at Corona Del Mar High School. The Balboa Bay 16 Quiksilver split
into two teams and were joined by Nor Cal powerhouse bay2bay, two San Diego
clubs, Seaside and Epic, as well... as Brandon Talieferro and Justin Deblasio's
new club "949".
The 17s and 18s scrimmaged in a
twelve team format that featured two rounds of pool play. OCVC, bay2bay, and
Seaside brought both their 17s and 18s teams, while "949" and SCVC
had their 18s teams at the scrimmage. Balboa Bay 17Quiksilver and 17 White
along with the 18 Quilver and white teams played as well. The BBVC 18Quiksilver
and 18White were the only teams to grasp the Halloween theme (see below).
It was a good day for all and a
great chance to see what teams will need to do to compete for a National Championship.
A special thanks to Julie keller and bay2bay for making the trip down to Newport.

Junior
Olympics: BBVC 18s Finish 2nd & 5th in Atlanta
Balboa Bay Seniors ended their storied BBVC careers with a strong Junior Olympics
performance. The 18Quiksilver team coached by UC Irvine's John Speraw rolled
through the first three days losing only one game in 8 matches on its way
to the 8-team Gold Bracket. There the Quiksilver team was joined by the Balboa
Bay 18White squad. Mike Rupp and Kurt peters orchestrated the White team to
a strong showing.
The 18 White team matched
up against number 1 seed MB Surf in the first round. The mostly Loyola High
School team outplayed the Balboa white group, beating them in 2 games to advance
to the semifinals. The 18White followed up a strong Boys Classic with a great
JO finish. Torey Darin was named All-Tournament team. It was especially rewarding
to see seniors Bayle Smith and Evan Kawahara wrap up their long careers with
BBVC on a positive note. Both boys have been BBVC mainstays since junior high.
Bayle is moving on to University of Southern California and Kawahara is headed
to the greatest University in the USA- UC Berkeley.
Balboa Bay 18 Quiksilver
found itself matched up against Eden Volleyball in its first round match.
After beating Eden in 2 quick games the Quiksilver team met longtime nemesis
Pali Volleyball Club in the semifinals. These two teams have played some great
matches in past Junior Olympics. When both teams were 15&Under Pali knocked
BBVC out in the Quarters and went on to win the Gold. In the 16s Balboa edged
Pali in an amazing three gamer in the semis and proceeded to win the gold
and last year Pali beat Balboa 21-19 in game 3 of the finals. Therefore, it
was our turn. 18Quiksilver advances to the finals in a sweep.
Pali Volleyball Club and
its coach/owner Matt Diaz are a class group of guys and the friendly rivalry
that has developed is one neither team will soon forget. Best of luck to Matt
Diaz and the boys from Pali as they head off to college. The friendships these
teams have created will last a lifetime.
In the finals Balboa Bay
18Quiksilver was defeated by a strong group from Riptides. Tanner Jansen,
Connor Hufghes, Chris Trefzger and Ian Castellana were named to the All-Tournament
team. So long seniors, it's been a great ride.
Best of luck in the future!!!!

Laguna

Laguna Beach High School,
made up of a mostly Balboa Bay lineup won the inaugural

Mater Dei High School led by Balboa Bay 18Quik's Connor Hughes, Harrison Carrol,
and Chris Trefzger won the CIF Division II State Title. The Monarchs defeated
Norco 25-18, 25-22, 25-15.
